One of the many entries recognises the importance of beach culture in Sydney, with the renowned Bondi and Balmoral beaches both lauded for their “gracious Mediterranean-styled pavilions.” The Bondi Surf Pavilion, which was first built in 1911, is celebrated as an “iconic piece of Australian beach architecture.”
The Melbourne Teacher’s College, in the suburb of Carlton, is pictured as the epitome of Queen Anne Revival Architecture. Also featured is Melbourne’s suburban architecture, including the
residence ‘Glyn’, which was designed by Melbournian, Rodney Alsop. “These are some of many great examples of Australian architecture featured in the Encyclopedia,” said Professor Philip Goad, one of the editors and Professor of Architecture at the University of Melbourne. “The book also profiles leading Australian architects and building styles as well as looking at construction materials, influences the development of the profession and many other aspects of the built environment.”
The Encyclopedia was launched on Wednesday at the Melbourne Museum by award-winning architect and host of Grand Designs Australia, Peter Maddison.
“It is an unprecedented look at the history of Australia through architecture,” Prof Goad continued. “There are over 1,000 entries complemented by more than 500 photos and illustrations.”
“The Encyclopedia discusses and provides pictorial examples of styles and profiles the individuals and firms who contributed to Australian design trends.”
