Transparency International backs corruption commission

Leading anti-corruption body, Transparency International Australia (TIA), has backed an Independent Commission against Corruption inquiry in South Australia.

TIA Chief Executive, Michael Ahrens, congratulated the new South Australian Premier, Jay Weatherill, on his announcement of a long-awaited ICAC inquiry. “This inquiry into corruption has been a long time coming,” Mr Ahrens said.

The South Australian Premier, Jay Weatherilll, announced the Commission after only four days in office. “We are delighted that the new Premier has been so quick to take decisive action,” Mr Ahrens continued.

“For too long possible corruption among public administration in the South Australia has lacked proper oversight arrangements. “The formation of this committee will force public servants to be more accountable for their actions.” Former Premier of South Australia, Mike Rann, had opposed establishing a corruption commission.

“He repeatedly dismissed calls for investigations in to corruption, despite mounting evidence that there could be a serious problem,” Mr Ahrens said.

“There is no benefit in pretending the potential problem of corruption doesn’t apply to South Australia as it does to other States. “Mr Weatherill is absolutely right in saying ‘good governments have nothing to hide’ and has shown he is willing to put his money up to back the announcement. Now it is a matter of prompt implementation.”
