RFDS congratulates Tim Fischer on Holy See appointment

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) congratulates its National Chairman, the Hon. Tim Fischer, on his nomination as Australia's Permanent Representative to the Holy See.

RFDS National CEO, Nigel Milan said the RFDS was delighted for Mr Fischer, but has mixed emotions about the appointment.

"While we're thrilled that Tim has been honoured by this nomination, it will be sad to lose such a valuable National Chairman," Mr Milan said.

"This nomination is well deserved and is a great honour for Tim and his family."

"Tim has been an inspiration to the RFDS and has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in the short time with us, particularly during this years 80th anniversary celebrations."

"Tim's even selling his soles for the RFDS, so to speak."

Today's announcement by the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, that Mr Fischer had been nominated as the inaugural Permanent Representative to the Holy See coincided with the RFDS Chairman's decision to auction his own piece of Papal memorabilia.

Mr Fischer will auction the soles that fell off his ancient joggers on the walk from Bronte to the Papal vigil at Sydney's Randwick Racecourse on Saturday night.

Mr Fischer will offer the soles for sale via eBay. All proceeds will go to the RFDS. Search 'Tim Fischer's shiny soles' on eBay.

"Tim's wisdom and guidance will be missed," Mr. Milan said.
