PR toolkit : How TV news works

Television is regarded as a glamorous medium and an important place to be seen.  It can also be the most dangerous and difficult medium to master.

Television deals in images.  It creates them instantaneously and destroys them almost as quickly.

The operative word is quickly.  The average TV story is told in a hurry.  One minute is a long time.  The average TV "grab" lasts just a few seconds.

Television is useful mainly for people who, over time (given that they remain in demand as "personalities"), seek to generate a public profile.

It is also an excellent medium for interviews that present specific picture opportunities.

Enormous numbers of people watch television.  In many cases, they are greatly influenced by what they see.  If you have a strong picture story and are a good performer on television, don't hesitate to use the medium if you get the opportunity.

Most television news bulletins last just half an hour.  So only the most dynamic, sensational or controversial stories will be used.  There is little room for softer, human-interest stories.  Any story with strong visuals is always working for you.

If you are able to get a story up and running, you must be extremely well prepared for the interview.
